Transfer News: Stellenbosch say no to Kaizer Chiefs’ money

In September 2023, Kaizer Chiefs successfully signed midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa from Stellenbosch FC. Mthethwa, known as ‘Ox’, agreed to a three-year contract extending until June 2026. Prior to this, he had notable stints with Royal Eagles and Black Leopards, and made his debut for the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, in September 2022.

Kaizer Chiefs’ Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr., expressed enthusiasm about Mthethwa’s addition, highlighting his experience and professionalism. Motaung Jr. also acknowledged Stellenbosch FC’s professionalism during the negotiation process.

 

Mthethwa officially joined his new teammates for training on September 25, 2023. His arrival was anticipated to strengthen Kaizer Chiefs’ midfield, given his consistent performances in the Premier Soccer League and his international experience.

 

It’s worth noting that prior to the successful transfer, there were reports in mid-September 2023 indicating that Stellenbosch FC had initially turned down offers from Kaizer Chiefs for Mthethwa. However, the deal was eventually finalized before the transfer window clos ed.
