David Moyes hits out at ‘terrible decisions’ after Everton collapse

The Blues boss was frustrated with his team’s defending in the 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town

David Moyes believes “terrible” decisions from some of his players were pivotal in the Ipswich Town equaliser that spoiled the party at Goodison Park. George Hirst headed in at the back post to bring the away side level after Everton appeared to be cruising following two early goals.

 

Moyes accepted Julio Enciso’s stunning strike just before the break “rocked” his side but still saw positives in the passages of play that followed – until Hirst’s late leveller.

Goals from Beto and Dwight McNeil looked set to create an afternoon in which Everton could savour the penultimate match at the Grand Old Lady.

But Ipswich were spurred on after Enciso found the top corner from 30 yards and managed to stay in the game long enough to capitalise.

 

After the game, Moyes appeared disappointed rather than angry but highlighted concerns over the second goal in his post-match post-mortem.

 

Everton had been on the attack when Nathan Patterson went down as he lost the ball on the edge of the Ipswich box. From there the Tractor Boys crossed the pitch with too much ease, Vitalii Mykolenko committing to a poor challenge on Dara O’Shea leading to neither full-back being able to defend the box when Hirst was found at the back post.

It was the fourth time this season that Everton had thrown away a two-goal lead. Asked why he thought his side were unable to see the game out, he responded: “I think if we all knew the answer we would make sure it doesn’t happen again. I think there’s a bit of understanding how to see the game through.”

Of the failure to come away with a useful three points, he added: “We’re disappointed. We never shook Ipswich off, really. They were always there or thereabouts. We just couldn’t quite get enough.

 

“I thought we did a lot of good things. We’ve tried some different things today as well to see how players play in different roles. I thought we did really well in the opening part of the game for 30 minutes or so. I thought we played really well and got the goals eventually.

 

“But I think the goal just before half-time for them just sort of rocked us a little bit. It always gave Ipswich something to go at and we couldn’t quite get the third goal to get ourselves clear.”
