It’s a dream come true’: How Torquay fans got their club back

Torquay United Football Club, based in Devon, England, has experienced significant changes in 2024 that have revitalized the club and its supporters.

In February 2024, the club faced financial difficulties, leading to administration and a 10-point deduction in the National League South. Chairman Clarke Osborne resigned, and manager Gary Johnson departed by mutual agreement. Assistant Aaron Downes took over as interim manager during this challenging period.

Despite these setbacks, a consortium of local businessmen, known as the Bryn Consortium, emerged as the preferred bidders to take over the club. Their involvement brought renewed optimism among fans, who had long desired local ownership to restore the club’s fortunes.

In May 2024, Torquay United appointed Paul Wotton, former Truro City manager, as the new head coach, with experienced football figure Neil Warnock serving as an advisor. This new leadership team aimed to stabilize the club and build a competitive squad for the upcoming season.

The combination of local ownership and a fresh management team has reinvigorated the club and its supporters. Fans have expressed a renewed sense of pride and optimism, believing that the club is now on a path to recovery and future success.

As the 2024–2025 season progresses, Torquay United aims to overcome past challenges and achieve promotion, with the backing of a dedicated fan base and a committed ownership  group.
